Thyroid Screening Abnormalities
Thyroid screening abnormalities are commonly identified during routine blood tests in primary care clinics across Dubai and the UAE. The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy production, temperature control, and hormonal balance. Abnormal thyroid function may present subtly and is often detected before symptoms become pronounced.
Thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Patients with hypothyroidism may experience fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, and mood changes. Hyperthyroidism may present with weight loss, palpitations, anxiety, tremors, and heat intolerance.
Screening involves measuring Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and sometimes free T4 and T3 levels. Abnormal results require clinical correlation and possible repeat testing.
Management depends on severity. Hypothyroidism is typically treated with thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Hyperthyroidism may require medication, specialist referral, or further imaging.
In the UAE, thyroid screening is frequently included in executive health check packages. Women are particularly affected, and routine screening during pregnancy is important.
Regular monitoring ensures hormone levels remain within target range. Most thyroid abnormalities are manageable with proper follow-up.
Early detection and structured management prevent long-term complications such as heart rhythm disorders or metabolic disturbances.
